The roulette is the most common game played in any casino. It was invented in France in the mid-17th century. With time, it had gained major popularity and moved to the United States. It was first started in Las Vegas, which is known to be the home of gambling in the country. The original roulette version is called the European roulette as it is still played in Europe. The other form is the American roulette which was designed in America at a later time. There are several notable differences between the European Roulette and the American Roulette:

1.The green numbers and the total number of pockets.

The American roulette has 38 pockets in total comprising 36 red and black numbers and 2 green numbers. On the other hand, the European Roulette has 37 pockets. Thirty six of them are red and black whereas the remaining one is green. The American Roulette usually has an extra pair of zeros in its roulette wheel which is not the case for the European roulette.

2.The order with which numbers appear on the wheel

The additional pair of zeros in the roulette wheel results in the numbers in the American roulette being different from those in the European roulette.

3. The house edge

The American roulette has a house edge of 5.26% while the European roulette has a house edge of 2.7%. This means that the American roulette has a house edge that is almost double that of the European roulette. This is attributed to the American roulette having an extra green number. It is therefore easier to win in the European roulette as compared to winning in the American roulette.

4.The American roulette has the 5 number bet

The 5 number bet usually consists of 1,2,3,0 and 00. It is a unique bet in that it is the only one that has a different house edge. All other bets usually have the same house edge. The fact that the European roulette does not contain the double zeros already gives the reason why it is not possible to place a five number bet in the European roulette. Though the amounts to be won are higher for a given amount of bet placed, the house edge increases to 7.89 which means the chances of winning are lower.

5.The optional en prison rule

The European roulette is the only one that allows this practice. This provision allows the player to spin the roulette again in the case where the result from the first spin was zero. The rules only allow once chance to redeem the bet after which it is lost. The American roulette does not have this feature. In case the result from the spin is zero, the bet is lost and the money goes to the house.
